Short answer
For a shaded pool, buy against a documented charging and operating plan—not a solar badge or an advertised runtime. Record when sun actually reaches the water, whether the exact offer includes an approved backup charger, and when the skimmer may operate alongside your pool routine. If an essential condition is unknown, leave the offer on hold.
This is an original research-based purchase checklist, not a hands-on test, a charging procedure or a ranked comparison. We have not measured sunlight requirements, debris pickup or battery endurance. The verified Betta SE Plus examples below illustrate questions to ask; they do not make it the winner for a shaded yard. No shopping links or prices are included.
A visual sunlight-to-purchase checkpoint
Text version of the solar-skimmer decision diagram:
- Observe sunlight on the water. Record sun, shade, date and season. Observed sunshine is not a validated battery-endurance prediction.
- Identify the exact offer. Match model, region and current manual revision. The unresolved Aiper and Beatbot US revision questions below stay unknown; a similar name or mirrored manual is not confirmation.
- Confirm charging and handling. Verify the supplied backup charger, required power state, safe charging location and retrieval procedure in the exact instructions. Do not transfer another model’s rules.
- Check the permitted operating window. Confirm swimmer, other-cleaner, treatment and circulation restrictions against the established pool routine. Do not alter sanitation to make a purchase fit; unresolved compatibility needs manufacturer and qualified-professional confirmation.
- Compare documented fit or hold. Compare complete prices and written terms only after essential fit checks. Unknown is not a pass. Manual skimming or postponing remains an option, and documented fit does not prove equivalent performance.
Original research-based purchase aid, not a charging procedure, operating schedule or comparative endurance test. Use the two-offer purchase card below to retain sources and unresolved questions.
1. Observe the water, not the weather forecast
A sunny day is not the same observation as sunlight reaching the skimmer’s panel. From a safe position on the deck, record:
- Which areas of the water receive direct sun in the morning, midday and afternoon.
- Shade from trees, buildings, screens or a cover; note the observation date and season.
- Whether the available sun overlaps the hours when the device is permitted to be in use.
- The alternative when sunlight is inadequate: manufacturer-approved charging, a different permitted operating window, or manual skimming without a new purchase.
These observations are a discussion record, not a validated solar-sizing calculation. Do not turn a few hours of observed sunshine into a promised runtime. Betta’s SE Plus manual, section 4.5, warns that fall/winter charging can be insufficient even on a sunny day and runtime can be shorter. That is a manufacturer statement for this model, not our cross-brand test result.
2. Check backup charging at the exact-model level
Write down the full model, region, manual revision and supplied charger identifier. Similar product names do not prove the same charging equipment or instructions.
For Betta SE Plus, the official manual describes an included adapter. Sections 4.1 and 4.6 distinguish ON for solar charging from OFF for adapter charging. This is why a generic claim that all solar skimmers charge the same way is not useful. Read the complete supplied instructions before handling or charging; this page is not a substitute.
Also record where charging and storage can safely take place, how the unit is retrieved, and who will do it. The same manual warns against leaving the device unattended in a hot, dry place out of the pool. Its below-68°F wording appears in a particular out-of-pool solar-charging discussion; we do not treat that passage as a general minimum water-temperature rating.
3. Confirm a usable operating window before buying
List normal swimmer use, circulation, other cleaner use, chemical treatment and maintenance. Then compare that list with the current instructions for the exact offered model.
The Betta SE Plus manual’s safety section prohibits swimming while the unit operates and use while other pool cleaning devices are in the pool. Those restrictions matter even if an advertisement emphasizes continuous operation. They do not establish the permissions or limitations of another model.
Do not change or disable your pool’s circulation or sanitation schedule to make a purchase fit this checklist. If a device’s instructions conflict with the established routine, have the manufacturer and a qualified pool professional resolve compatibility before buying. We are not recommending a daily schedule or declaring simultaneous filtration safe for an unidentified skimmer.
Surface-debris collection is a separate purchasing job from floor cleaning or water treatment. If the underlying problem is green water, start with the water-condition guide rather than assuming another debris collector solves it.
4. Two-offer sunlight and operating-window purchase card
Copy this card twice—once for Offer A, once for Offer B. Record a source or written confirmation for each answer. It stores or submits nothing.

Unknown does not equal pass. Equipment chemical limits are not recommended sanitation targets or swim-clearance criteria. A documented fit is also not a guarantee of cleaning performance.
Use our broader cleaner-fit worksheet for pool geometry and handling questions. Once fit is documented, the cleaner budget calculator can organize explicit purchase, wear, repair and incremental-energy assumptions. Do not enter invented solar savings or treat missing energy measurements as zero cost.
5. What remains unverified in this guide
We have not established current US manual/revision equivalence for the Aiper Surfer S2 / EcoSurfer S2 offers or Beatbot iSkim Ultra. The research pass found unresolved charger/revision and operating-restriction questions; it did not justify transferring mirrored-manual instructions into a current US purchasing recommendation. Their model-specific operating-fit fields remain unknown here. There is no comparative winner, endurance ranking or brand-wide permission to run alongside circulation.
Compare or pause
Ready to compare: both offers have documented charging, operating and handling requirements compatible with your pool routine. Compare complete prices and written terms without claiming equivalent cleaning performance.
Pause before buying: a must-have condition, supplied charger or operating restriction remains unknown. Manual skimming or postponing the purchase remains a valid outcome.
For any candidate, retain the actual supplied manual and seller’s written terms.
FAQ
Will a solar pool skimmer work in a shaded pool?
A solar label alone cannot establish that. Record when sunlight reaches the water, check the exact model's backup-charging instructions and confirm an operating window compatible with the pool's other equipment. We have not tested shaded-pool endurance or established a minimum sunlight requirement.
Can Betta SE Plus charge from an adapter?
The official SE Plus manual describes an included adapter and requires the unit OFF for adapter charging and ON for solar charging. Do not apply solar-only statements about another Betta model to SE Plus. Follow the complete supplied manual for charging and handling.
Can I leave a solar skimmer running with swimmers or another cleaner?
Do not assume that. The Betta SE Plus manual prohibits swimming while it operates and use with other cleaning devices in the pool. Other models need their own current instructions, including any circulation restrictions. This checklist does not recommend a universal operating schedule.
Does backup charging make a skimmer maintenance-free?
No. Budget time for safe retrieval, basket and panel cleaning, charging and storage under the exact manual. Backup charging is an option to verify, not a guarantee of continuous cleaning or suitability for your yard.
