Short answer
Choose the filter that fits your circulation system and a cleaning routine you can support—not the type with the most persuasive headline. Sand, conventional cartridge and DE filters create different service questions. Before buying, confirm the exact model, installation changes, service access and allowed cleaning-water destination. Then compare complete offers, not tank prices alone.
This is an original, research-based buyer guide, not a hands-on test, a sizing calculation or a ranked product roundup. Manufacturer manuals and support pages were retrieved October 23, 2026. The named models below illustrate documented differences; they are not recommendations for your pool. No generic micron ranking, installed-price range or promised water/energy savings is used.
Compare the work, not just the label
| Type or documented example | What the evidence establishes | Question to resolve before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Sand — Pentair Triton family | The manual describes dirt collection in a sand bed and backwashing to remove accumulated debris. | Can the installation support the exact filter/valve and an allowed backwash-water destination? |
| Conventional cartridge — Clean and Clear Plus | The cast-clamp manual describes removing elements, hose washing and cleaning out the tank. | Is there enough access to remove and clean the elements, and who will do it? |
| Cartridge-style DE — Quad D.E. | The manual specifies DE coating and describes both backwashing and manual cartridge cleaning. | Are DE supplies, the specified valve arrangement and service work included in the plan? |
| Perflex DE exception | Hayward says Perflex bump filters cannot be backwashed. | Does the quote identify the exact model and its own cleaning instructions, rather than a generic DE procedure? |
The sand description comes from Pentair’s Triton manual, printed page 1; cartridge cleaning from the Clean and Clear Plus cast-clamp manual, page 7. These examples explain tasks, not comparative cleaning performance or universal service intervals.
Two naming traps that can change the order
Cartridge-shaped does not always mean cartridge-only
Pentair’s Quad D.E. manual identifies the equipment as a cartridge-style DE filter. It requires DE and contains separate backwashing and manual-cleaning sections. Do not order replacement elements, omit DE or assume a conventional cartridge cleaning routine based on a photograph of pleated elements.
DE does not mean one universal backwash method
Hayward’s DE support answer explicitly distinguishes Perflex bump filters, which it says cannot be backwashed. That is why the buying question is “What cleaning method does this exact model require?” rather than “How do I backwash any DE filter?” This comparison is not a valve-operation or DE-dosing procedure.
Even the model family may have different manuals
Pentair’s Clean and Clear Plus support page links separate spring-clamp and cast-clamp manuals. Match the equipment revision, not just the family name.
There is also an unresolved wording issue: the retrieved cast-clamp manual’s manual-cleaning and troubleshooting sections mention pressure remaining high “after backwashing,” while its cleaning instructions describe cartridge removal and hose washing. We do not treat that phrase as confirmation of a backwash capability or invent a procedure to reconcile it. Have Pentair or the installer confirm the applicable instructions for the offered equipment. The documented hose-cleaning work alone is enough to reject a “no cleaning water needed” claim.
Repair, media service or a whole new filter?
Before comparing new tanks, ask the service professional to identify what actually needs attention. Record the existing model and the diagnosis: media cleaning/replacement, an internal component repair, or complete equipment replacement. A dirty pool or pressure reading by itself is not a remote diagnosis of a failed tank.
If green water prompted the purchase, start with the green-pool diagnosis and re-entry guide. Filtration does not replace sanitation or establish that water is safe to swim in. The Triton manual explicitly separates removal of suspended matter from sanitizing and balancing water.
When replacing the pump too, compare the pump fit questions alongside the filter proposal. A larger pump or a matching pipe connection does not by itself establish that the combination is suitable. Ask the installer to document compatibility across the system, including other equipment’s operating limits.
Five purchase gates
- Identity: exact proposed model, equipment revision, media and applicable manual. Resolve conventional cartridge versus cartridge-style DE before ordering supplies.
- System fit: installer-confirmed flow compatibility, plumbing/valve changes and installation requirements. This guide does not size a filter from pool gallons or pump horsepower.
- Service access: measured available clearance versus the model’s required removal/service space, plus a person able to perform the work safely. Tank height is not the same as removal clearance; the Clean and Clear Plus manual lists model-specific vertical clearance separately.
- Cleaning and disposal: exact cleaning method, water access and a permitted destination for the waste. Confirm local requirements with the responsible authority or utility; this guide does not authorize discharge to a street, storm drain, sewer or neighboring property.
- Complete offer: itemized installation, supplies and exclusions, plus actual written warranty terms. An unknown inclusion is an unresolved purchase condition, not a zero-dollar cost.
Two-offer replacement card
Copy this card into your quote request. Replace each “Unresolved” only with a written answer or a documented site measurement; this is a buying aid, not engineering approval.
| Required answer | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Existing tank model and diagnosis: service, repair or replacement? | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Proposed model, revision, media and manual supplied | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Installer-confirmed flow compatibility and other equipment limits | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Plumbing, valve and pad changes required | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Required service clearance / measured available clearance | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Cleaning method and person responsible for safe service | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Clean-pressure baseline, pump operating condition and manual-defined cleaning trigger documented by installer | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Cleaning/backwash-water destination and who confirms local permission | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Included valve, media/elements, fittings and first setup | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Equipment price, installation, disposal and excluded charges; quote date | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Consumable/replacement-element quote and service charge; unknown costs | Unresolved | Unresolved |
| Seller/channel and supplied parts versus labor warranty terms | Unresolved | Unresolved |
Hold the order if compatibility, safe service access, disposal arrangements or essential inclusions remain unresolved. Once both offers clear those gates, compare the complete quoted scopes. Do not turn a guessed media lifespan or cleaning frequency into a five-year ownership-cost claim.
The pressure-baseline row deliberately includes pump operating conditions. For example, the Quad D.E. manual says its starting pressure depends on variable-speed pump RPM and provides a place to record that RPM. It does not establish a universal pressure trigger for other filters.
Why the cheapest tank may not be the cheapest complete offer
A concrete inclusion trap appears on Hayward’s S310S listing. The title says “Valve Not Included” and the specification table agrees, even though the generic feature list describes a VariFlo valve. Require the seller to identify the included equipment rather than treating the feature list as a packing list.
Keep these amounts separate: equipment; valve and media; plumbing/site work; installation and startup; removal of old equipment; ongoing consumables and service. We have not obtained property-specific quotes, and we do not publish a national or Texas installed-price estimate here. Unknown future expenses stay unknown—not zero.
For coverage, use the questions in the equipment warranty guide. Its existing model matrix is not evidence of coverage for these filters. Obtain terms for the exact SKU, seller and installation arrangement; separate parts, labor and excluded expenses before comparing a warranty headline.
When comparison is useful—and when to pause
Ready to compare: both exact-model offers document system compatibility, workable service access, cleaning/disposal arrangements and complete installation scope. Compare the supplied terms and prices rather than a generic type ranking.
Pause before buying: the diagnosis, clamp/manual revision, required media, safe service access or essential inclusion is unknown. A lower tank price does not resolve those gaps.
Safety boundary: this is not a filter-opening guide
Filters are pressurized equipment. Pentair’s retrieved manuals warn that trapped air can cause violent lid separation, serious injury or death. Never open a pressurized filter or adjust its clamp while pressurized or while the pump is on. Installation must follow the exact manual and applicable codes with a qualified professional. Service, isolation, pressure relief, reassembly and restart require the applicable instructions—not a generic sequence copied from a different tank or clamp.
If the label, clamp type, pressure indication or correct procedure is uncertain, stop and use a qualified service professional. Neither a new filter nor clear-looking water is swimming clearance; chemistry, sanitation and treatment-label requirements remain separate checks.
FAQ
Which is best: sand, cartridge or DE?
There is no universal winner in this research-based guide. Compare exact-model flow compatibility, cleaning tasks, service access, permitted wastewater disposal and complete installation quotes. We have not tested these filters or established a performance ranking.
Can I switch from sand to a cartridge filter?
Possibly, but it is not automatically a drop-in replacement. A qualified installer must check the proposed model against system flow, plumbing, available service clearance and cleaning-water arrangements. Compare the required modifications before ordering.
Does cartridge-style mean a filter needs no DE?
No. Pentair Quad D.E. is a cartridge-style DE filter. Its manual specifies DE coating and describes backwashing and manual cartridge cleaning. Identify the exact model and applicable manual rather than choosing consumables by element shape.
Do all DE filters backwash?
No. Hayward distinguishes Perflex bump filters, which it says cannot be backwashed. Pentair Quad D.E. has model-specific backwash instructions. Do not transfer either cleaning procedure to an unidentified filter.
Does cartridge cleaning use no water?
No. The Clean and Clear Plus cast-clamp manual describes removing cartridges, washing them with a garden hose and washing out the tank. Plan for cleaning water and an allowed disposal destination; no backwash is not a zero-water promise.
What should a filter replacement quote include?
Exact model and manual, system compatibility, service clearance, cleaning and disposal arrangements, included valve and media, plumbing and installation work, removal of old equipment, itemized prices and written parts/labor terms. Leave unknowns unresolved rather than treating them as included or free.
